I wanted to do a wall hanging for my sister because she and her husband and 4 children were going to be sealed in the St. George temple after about 18 years of marriage (They were sealed in August 2007). I was so excited for her that I wanted to do something special for their family. I looked at your picture gallery and loved the quilts displayed there. I actually got my lay out idea of quilt blocks from one of the quilts on your gallery. I hope that was okay. So, it wasn't all my ideas. I had help from your gallery. Anyway, I decided to have each block represent something. The first two names (Debbie and Dave) are my sister and her husband (on the top of the quilt). I did little quilt blocks that reminded me of them. I also got each family member's favorite color and made sure the color was included in their quilt block. Of course the rest of the names are the children. They range in ages from 18 down to 10 years old. The star shapes and diamonds I thought were appropriate because they reminded me of the heavens, which the Lord created. They also reminded me of something religious. One of the stars on the top of the quilt kind of reminded me of a compass and I was thinking later on while making the quilt that it could represent the Lord's direction in our lives. The flowers represented the season they were sealed, a time when the flowers were blooming. I chose the color blue, because that is my sister's favorite color. After putting the top together, I took it to my friend who has an embroidery business. They embroidered each family member's name on their individual square, the family name, "Families are Forever," and around the edge, the scripture from Doctrine and Covenants 88:119 (Organize yourselves, prepare every needful thing and establish a house...). We chose each "name" color to kind of balance out the colors on the quilt. After I had the quilt put all together, I quilted it on my sewing machine with different color threads. I liked the silver and iridescent threads the best. Anyway, thank you again for your talent in making temple patterns and for your gallery that gave me some inspiration. Hope you enjoy the picture of the wall hanging.Love, Dorie Mattingley
