Pattern Reversals

In 5 years of designing and producing hundreds of patterns, I have now had two complaints on the reversals of the patterns and unit piece charts. (I hope there isn't more.) The first, I thought, was a one time thing. The second makes me think we need more explanation. So, let me explain!

The very nature of paper/foundation piecing includes the reversal of the pattern. But if you have not paper pieced before or a lot, you may not realize that the patterns are reversed. They are reversed simply because you sew the fabric on the backside of the pattern piece. This is necessary because you need to see the lines printed on the paper as you sew.

I include in my patterns a unit piece chart, which is also a mirror image of the finished project. When you lay out the pattern pieces, you should lay them out printed side up, and fabric side down as the unit piece chart shows. You can sew it in any order you want. But, I do include a suggested sewing order on the temple instruction sheet. If this order is followed, there should be no mistakes. I guarantee it, money back.

I have racked my brain and the only thing I can figure out is that these two quilters have arranged the pieces according the to unit piece chart with the fabric side up. That would have them finished with a big mess or, at the very least, a reversed project. I often tell the quilters I teach, you have to learn to think backwards in order to paper piece. I have tried to make it easier for people by including the unit piece chart and the step-by-step instructions. I hope it is helping, maybe not. Please, when it doubt, please take the time to read the instructions or email me with any questions.
